City of Fayetteville – NEWS RELEASE RE: Bicycle Planning Grant

(from the City of Fayetteville website)

City of Fayetteville Awarded Bicycle Planning Grant

Post Date:04/13/2018 4:19 PM

DBPT_Logo_Color(Fayetteville, N.C.) – The City of Fayetteville will receive assistance with bicycle planning, thanks to a grant awarded this month by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

With an increasing population and a desire for accessible and connected multi-modal transportation options, the demand for more walkable and bikeable communities shows the need for local planning assistance to make this a reality.

“As a part of City Council’s Strategic Planning process, they identified the development of a comprehensive bicycle plan as a priority,” said Lee Jernigan, City Traffic Engineer. “We are excited to receive these grant funds that will allow us to begin the planning process. This plan will complement the City’s soon-to-be completed comprehensive pedestrian plan, thereby providing an overall vision for biking and walking improvements in our community.”

Recipients were selected from a pool of 23 applications by an awards committee comprised of representatives from regional planning organizations and councils of government, local governments, health professionals and N.C. DOT staff from multiple units.

Plans funded are not for one specific project, but represent a comprehensive strategy for expanding bicycle and pedestrian opportunities within a given municipality. These plans address facilities, programs, services and regulations that encourage safe walking and bicycling. Now in its 15th year, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant program has awarded over $5 million for 193 community plans.

For more information on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative, contact the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation through contacts listed at https://www.ncdot.gov/bikeped/contact/ or visit the Planning Grant Initiative website at https://connect.ncdot.gov/municipalities/PlanningGrants/Pages/Planning-Grant-Initiative.aspx.

National Association of Home Builders on Lumber Tariffs

Tariffs on Canadian lumber weighing on US home builders

National Association of Home Builders’ Jerry Howard on the impact of tariffs on home builders and housing prices.

The National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) is not happy with President Donald Trump’s steep tariffs on Canadian lumber which are killing the construction industry, according to NAHB CEO Jerry Howard.

“It’s ludicrous that a neighboring country like Canada is not being able to import into our country,” Howard told FOX Business’ Stuart Varney on “Varney & Co.” on Monday. “We are importing lumber from Russia to build our American homes – it just doesn’t make sense.”

The Trump administration announced tariffs on Canadian lumber last April, which has caused the price of lumber to increase 25% from a year ago and 60% from two years ago, according to Howard.

“It’s very, very difficult for our builders absorb that kind of an increase,” he said.

The construction industry is still in recovery mode from the recession and while demand is up, the industry still has a ways to go.

“We are still only at about 66% capacity,” Howard said.

The tariffs have also created availability issues.

“Because of these tariffs lumber coming across the border from Canada is coming at a slower pace and it’s really holding up the construction process, which also adds to the cost,” Howard said.
