REP. JOHN SZOKA FILES BILL TO STUDY WATER RATES CHARGED TO CUSTOMERS SERVED OUTSIDE OF MUNICIPAL BOUNDARIES
Raleigh, N.C. – Sponsor, Rep. John Szoka filed House Bill 522, directing the Legislative Research Commission to study water and wastewater rates charged to customers outside of municipal boundaries.
“After hearing from many of my constituents outside of the city of Fayetteville about their high water bills, I started looking at outside water rates across the State and found wide variations in the amount municipalities were charging.” State Rep. John Szoka stated.
Currently, PWC customers outside of the city of Fayetteville are paying around 75% more for water and wastewater services than those customers that live inside the city. These higher rates seem to be a trend across North Carolina with some outside customers paying, as high as, 200% more than inside customers.
Representative Szoka states, “With these large variations in water bills folks are paying across the State, the Legislature needs to look into this issue and ensure that both customers are paying a fair rate for their water and that municipalities are charging a sustainable rate.”
